Welcoming a new life into the world is a deeply personal and transformative experience. Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, the journey of birth deserves care, presence, and unwavering support. That’s where a traditional birth companion—also known as a traditional birth attendant or birth keeper—comes in.
💫 What Is a Traditional Birth Companion?
Unlike some professional and medical roles in birth, a traditional birth companion offers non-medical, holistic support throughout preconception, pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. Rooted in ancestral practices, this role emphasizes:
Emotional and spiritual support
Holding sacred space during birth
Advocacy and respect for your birth choices
Physical comfort
Guidance for partners and family members
The relationship is built on trust, presence, and empowerment, ensuring that you feel heard, respected, and supported every step of the way.
🤍 The History of Traditional Birth Support
Historically, before the medicalization of birth, a local woman was called to be with a birthing woman, often an elder, a sister, an aunt, or grandmother. This woman was recognized in her community for her understanding and her ongoing study of the physical and spiritual process of birth, motherhood, and female and newborn physiology. She was likely taught at the feet of her predecessor, another wise woman of the community, and most often these women were also healers due to their knowledge of nature, ritual, and prayer.
Today, traditional birth companions approach this work as a calling, not just a service. We understand birth as a rite of passage—a moment to be witnessed, protected, and honoured. It’s about holding space, not managing outcomes. We believe birth is not a medical event to be managed by outside authorities.
What that looks like:
Sitting quietly beside you in labor, offering grounding presence
Encouraging your strength and intuition
Helping you stay connected to your body, your baby, and your power
Supporting your partner and family so they can be present in their own way
